Mosul After ISIS: A Conversation with Omar Mohammed, the 'Mosul Eye'

Summary

On January 15th, 2020, the Program on Extremism at The George Washington University, in conjunction with GW Libraries & Academic Innovation and the National Churchill Library and Leadership Center, hosted the event with Omar Mohammed, the Iraqi historian and journalist behind Mosul Eye - the anonymous news blog that reported on conditions in Mosul and the atrocities carried out by ISIS during the group's occupation of the city. As one of the main sources of information on daily life in the city under ISIS control, the Mosul Eye blog was a crucial resource for the outside world. Since Mosul was liberated, Mr. Mohammed continues to work to support the revival of the city. 

Mr. Mohammed spoke about the current situation and recent developments in Mosul and in Iraq. He will discuss the work being done to rebuild Mosul in the aftermath of the Caliphate, including civil society efforts to repair and revitalize cultural heritage sites in the city. A moderated discussion followed, hosted by Mike Giglio, staff writer for The Atlantic and author of Shatter the Nations: ISIS and the War for the Caliphate.
