Paris to Orlando: Comparing the Terrorist Threat to Europe and America

On July 12, 2016, the Program on Extremism hosted a panel discussion entitled “Paris to Orlando: Comparing the Terrorist Threat to Europe and America.” The event featured Peter Neumann, director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation, Sebastian Rotella, author and senior reporter at ProPublica, and Lorenzo Vidino, director of the Program on Extremism. The speakers discussed the threat of Islamist-inspired terrorism in both the American and European contexts, comparing threats from violent extremism on either side of the Atlantic. The conversation centered on the key differences between the two settings, highlighting disparities in the number of foreign fighters who have traveled to conflict areas abroad.
