15 minutes on Congress and the Muslim Brotherhood

The Program on Extremism hosted a concise briefing on renewed efforts in Congress to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. Two bipartisan bills introduced last week have reignited a longstanding debate about the group’s ideology, global network, and relevance to U.S. national security.
As American lawmakers revisit this issue, they can draw valuable lessons from other Western governments that have grappled with similar questions. In 2014, the UK launched the most comprehensive review of the Muslim Brotherhood ever conducted by a Western government. Ordered by then-Prime Minister David Cameron, the review assessed the group’s philosophy, activities, and influence both domestically and internationally.
To provide historical insight and policy context, Sir John Jenkins - who led the UK government’s 2014 Muslim Brotherhood Review - joined the Program on Extremism's Director Lorenzo Vidino, who served as an external expert for the review. Together, they discussed the UK’s findings, how they shaped British policy, and what implications they may hold for current U.S. deliberations.
